SPAMMER APOLOGY
« on: August 30, 2008, 05:00:36 PM »
My apology to those that got the spam email recently from a member called "Shantal"

Some stupid spammer went through all the trouble to register on here and then sent out those emails from within the site.

Amazing what some idiots will go through to do that.

They have been banned a hopefully it wont happen in the future.

I also added one other thing a person now has to go through.  They will have to answer a question like the one below...

What is the sum of (as a number)
18 + 11 + FOUR =

I also set everyone's email to be hidden, even if you did not check that option for it to be.

Only admins and moderators can see email addresses now.

Jack,

Perhaps if this is possible, assuming they are reaching us via private messages is to make a minimum of say 50 to 100 posts before someone can even send a pm to anyone.  Any true forum user will easily hit the 50 mark, but a true spammer might see this as something not worth his time. I can see how it will prevent good newbies from sending pms in the beginning, but as I mentioned, they'll probably hit the 50 post milestone in no time flat.

I have tried to set it up that way  (min 5), but for some reason it is not working correctly I don't think, or they know how to go through a backdoor to send those.

Hopefully when the new version of the software I use comes out it will solve some of these problems.   Right now its in beta.
