Slow PC
« on: September 09, 2013, 08:56:07 PM »
For awhile now, seeeveral months or so for sure, my PC has been acting up and recently it began shutting down on it's own. I assumed it would be a hard drive problem or something so I called JackJ and he mentioned a power supply as well. Hince therefore, it might not be a virus  this time but a hardware problem maybe. To tell you how bad it was performing, it wouldn't even load windows! Once i couldnt do anything with it, i cut it off and pulled the cover. Now please understand, i pop the cover ever so often and blow it out with canned air(outdoors), but the past cleaning i've done i for some odd reason failed to pull the fan and cooling block to the processor.... when i pulled it off it was slap full of built up dust! I mean caked on! ....Yikes! ....I was over heating the proccessor to the point of not even running  :o. The power supply was pretty soiled as well so i did a job on it too. After identifying the bad spots, I wound up cleaning all the components and remounted it all. There is no telling what didnot update during that time frame due to poor performance so once i hooked it back up, got evrything arranged i updated everything, ran everything protection and performance wise and it is running really good now ater the few shut downs and re-starts required.

Runs like a Buzz Plug right out of the package!  ;D

Wow ! You are very competent with those PCs. I wouldn't begin to attempt something like that. Glad it improved your setup.

Glad it's working for ya again Buzz.  Saved that money on the new PC!

Dust is for sure your computers enemy, as it builds up the heat.   So at least every couple of months keep them vacuumed and blown out.   Especially if you keep the desktop case actually sitting on the floor.
Also those fans wear out too and don't work as efficiently as they did as new, so its a good idea to replace them if the computer is really old.  Might get you a few more years out it.
They make upgraded fans, and even better fans that attach to the processor, that really help out a lot.  Buzz take a look at the fans on some of the cases Dan has been building.

I never would have thought about dust being that bad on computers.  Mine got slow over the years and when I replaced my printer the new one downloaded so much stuff that it took 30 min to get on internet explorer.  I contacted a friend who builds computers and was given a web site.

I logged on to it and was asked if they could take over my computer and do a diagnostic.  They did and reported just what I thought (98% of my RAM was used just to run the computer and all of the background stuff).  They said my unit could have the RAM quadrupled and gave me a list of compatible cards.  Their cards were only $30 for what I needed so I bought them and put them in my unit.  Now I can get on the net in 3-4 seconds with less than 25% of my RAM used.

Most peoples computers get slow from all the background applications running that they don't even know if running.  Over a period of time there will be so many that you cant run a normal program.   Same thing with internet browsers ESPECIALLY Internet Explorer has crap (add-ons like ASK toolbars, etc) load and jump on them all the time.

Type "msconfig" in your search box on the start menu, and you will see a tab that says start up.  Disable any itunes, real audio, toolbar stuff, music managers or anything else that doesn't need to load on startup and you will speed up your PC.
