finally back on the water
« on: August 16, 2012, 11:25:17 AM »
After not having the boat out for two years, we finally took it out for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon.  Waited until the grandson came home from kindergarten, and my wife and I, and the two grandsons (their first time in the boat) hit the water. Only ones out there, water smooth as glass. Only caught one bluegill on a yellow/white spinner bait, but at least it was a fish and not weeds.  The lake (Pee Wee) has been really low due to the drought, but since we've had some decent rains lately the water level is sufficient enough to launch now.  Hoping to get back out there again soon!  :)

Good job Waterwings ! My grandson is living with me this yr. He is six. Today was the first day of school and when the wife and I picked him up in the car the first thing he said was "when we going fishing?" LOL. when we got home he said " How come the truck is backed up?" Ha ha. I got out today for a while. I'll take him tomorrow evening since he will be able to stay up a little bit later. He is a great guy. So far he behaves real well on the boat. Glad you got out.

Thanks, guys.  The 5 yr old (6 in Nov) has only been fishing once (last week) from the bank prior to our boat "excursion" yesterday, and he's really picked up on casting, even if it is one of those Walmart Batman poles (for now).  I had the boat hitched to the truck and ready to go yesterday when he got home, and he ran off the bus up the driveway, climbed up in the boat, and said I'm ready!  Made my day  :)

Glad to hear the boat still floats Greg. Some of the best times I have ever had on the water was teaching my youngest grandson to fish. Be wary though, he now out fishes me every trip!

With this new “position” I have at work I haven’t done much fishing this year. I am taking off next week and plan on doing only one thing; fish every day! >:D

Thanks, guys.  I'm surprised it still floated too.  After 2 years of not doing it I had to retrain myself how to back the dang thing down the ramp, and finally got it in the water, lol.  Hope you catch a bunch next week, Scott!

Thanks.  Just came in from the garage, and now there are two kids poles rigged for the grandsons. Planning on taking the boat out tomorrow morning and see if anything is biting.  The boys don't know we're going (they're fast asleep), so they'll be surprised, and I shouldn't have any trouble getting them out of bed when I tell them.   :)

Okay, got home awhile ago from our venture, and am happy to report our grandson made his first catch today.  Needless to say, he was pretty happy about the event  :) .

Made his day and mine  :) .  Caught about a 6" bluegill on a nightcrawler, and he did well reeling it in.  The cool part was when he announced loudly, but somewhat in disbelief, "Hey. I got something!".  My wife caught two bluegill, and I had a nice bass break the surface and spit my hook. Only bite I got all day, but that was fine with me seeing the grandson's face lit up on his catch.  :)

Went out by myself this afternoon (both grandsons in school).  Didn't get on the water until noon, and off at 2:30.  Slight breeze across the surface creating a slight chop at times, water temp around 81 degrees.  Fished water anywhere from 1'-2' of depth along the banks near some grass/weeds, and the rocks along the dam, and also probed the depths of 10'-18'.  Tried plastics and spinner baits.  It was quiet out there, and I had all 400+ acres to myself, but didn't venture too far from the dock, spending most of the time anchored, except when shifting spots.  When I pulled into the parking lot and started prepping the boat, there was a young fellow who came up to me and asked me if there were any fish out there. I replied "somewhere, but danged if I can find them".    :-\ .  If the weather is decent I might try to sneak out there early tomorrow morning after the bus picks up the oldest grandson at 0630.

I went down to the KY River at the ramp in town here and fished from 12:30 - 19:00 and only caught three or four keepers. Slow day here. Hoipe you catch'em tomorrow Greg.

huh???  :o  Does he know sumthin you don't? Do you have access to a ph meter?  Shoot, if nuttin else, take a few fists fulls of fish food out there in the morning and strow it in the area that you'll be fishing.... just to see what pops up ya know and hopefully the food chain will show itself for you.  ;D

Have you ever catfished there at PeeWee, WW? Any in there you know of?

Buzz, no ph meter or fish food available.  I've heard of guys catching cats there, but I'm one of those that hates catching them.  But of course at this stage of the game even a cat would be welcome...maybe  :)

Thanks, Carter, and hopefully I'll make it out there.  Only 3 or 4 keepers. Show-off!  :)

My day was much the same as you guys. I found small fish in big places. They are starting to bust on shad in open water but couldn’t find any size. I’m going to break out the Little George and bomb ‘em! ;D

Right on Scott, the shad balls are everywhere. And so are the gar (in the river). Yesterday evening I could have sworn I saw a spoonbill leap into the air but it was probably just a gar.

I'd settle for that at the moment  :) .  I didn't make it on the water as planned this morning, but maybe tomorrow.

A little George is kinda like a silver buddy. It is a compact shiny piece of lead with a tailspinner on it.
