Black Eye on B.A.S.S.
« on: September 22, 2011, 03:42:59 PM »
A black eye has been put on B.A.S.S.. The co-angler fishing with Nate Wellman up at Erie during a Northern Open said Nate made an offer to buy his big fish for $1000; not once but at least three times. You can read about it on www.BassFan.com and a little about it on www.Bassmaster.com to get the story. But it boils down to this, a pro (so called) made an attempt to cheat. The co-angler did not go along with it. B.A.S.S. only fined him and put him on probation. The PAA and FLW banned him for a year. The kicker is, he earned a spot at the Classic because he won the tournament. Since he was not DQ'd the second place finisher is the one who should have gotten first place and the Classic berth. Also, every pro down the list should have been moved up one spot and earned a little more money and, the guy who missed the cut would also now have made it and a check. It is a real mess. Well, after three weeks or so Mr. Wellman and B.A.S.S. have come to an agreement that he will not fish the Classic or any more tournaments until March 2012. Big deal! He has stated all along he was just joking with his co-angler. The first time he said it maybe, but not when it is repeated more than once. He should be banned for life and made to forefit his winnings. The only thing I see that could happen now is that the rest of the pros from that tournament get together and file a class-action suit. Cheaters and cheating should not be tolerated and can kill our sport faster than anything. Well, just wanted to let y'all know what was going on if you hadn't heard.
Oh, and now Bass Pro Shops has a suit filed against them in Federal Court. That article is on BassFan too.

I’m sure you have heard the old saying; Locks are just there to keep honest people honest.
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn of this happening many times before.
If there’s money involved someone’s going to try to cheat the system! ::)

Seems like BASS goofed up initially and now trying to save face goofed up again. What a mess. I'd be surprised if Nate can salvage a career from this. If I was a betting man I'd say he was done for good.
